Waterfront Enhancement - Phase I Plans Announced

17 February 2026

The City of Prince Rupert is pleased to move forward with significant enhancements to Rotary Waterfront Park, supported by provincial funding that enables the community to begin realizing long‑standing priorities identified in the 2030 Vision, the Official Community Plan, and the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Plan. This investment is a major step toward revitalizing the waterfront into a vibrant, active, and accessible public space for residents and visitors.

Moving the historic Kwinitsa Station to a new location within the waterfront area will create room for an expanded suite of amenities in Rotary Waterfront Park. Planned improvements include new covered seating areas, a welcome plaza, enhanced playground and natural play features, public art installations, and interpretive signage that highlights local history and culture. These additions will significantly enhance activation of the waterfront and strengthen it as a year‑round community destination.

Once relocated, the renewed Kwinitsa Station will be advanced through a partnership between the City, Tourism Prince Rupert, and the Museum of Northern BC, with continued collaboration with VIA Rail to support future rail‑related activity. The City of Prince Rupert and its partners are seeking additional funding to support the relocation and renovation of the historic Kwinitsa Station.

As part of this phase of work, the City is inviting the community to help shape the vision for children’s play elements in the redeveloped park. A public survey will be available on the City’s Waterfront Engagement Project page on Rupert Talks, where residents can share ideas and preferences to help guide the final design.
