The City of Prince Rupert is completing a study to make our streets safer for walking and rolling. Over the next few months, the City will carry out an assessment of its existing road and sidewalk network. This assessment will help the City plan for future infrastructure and policy improvements that were recommended in Connect Rupert, our recently-completed transportation plan.

During this time, we will be engaging with community members to understand where people are walking and what challenges currently exist when walking throughout Prince Rupert. Your input will help the City to identify priorities and opportunities to make walking a more attractive transportation option for more residents.

This study is being completed as part of the Complete Communities Program, funded by the Province of B.C. Ministry of Housing and will build on the City’s existing plans, including Connect Rupert, Rupert Plays (Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Plan), the Asset Management and Infrastructure Replacement Strategy, and the new Official Community Plan.

At last night's meeting, Prince Rupert City Council officially adopted the Connect Rupert: Transportation Plan and directed staff to initiate pursuing actions identified in the plan, keeping in mind budget and capacity constraints. We want to thank all those who provided input on our various surveys, engagement sessions and interviews. This plan will help to guide the development of City transportation networks and infrastructure over the next decade.

Survey #2 is now live!

Following the first round of engagement, the project team has developed a draft Plan with strategies and actions for the City-Wide Transportation Plan.

We are excited to share the draft Plan with you, and hear your feedback on our priority strategies and actions. Our second community survey is live from February 13th to March 5th. By completing the survey, you are eligible to win one of three small prizes!

In June 2022, the City of Prince Rupert launched the planning and public engagement process for Connect Rupert. Connect Rupert is name of the Transportation Plan that the City is developing. Connect Rupert will provide an opportunity for the City to take stock of all forms of transportation in Prince Rupert today, plan for the future, and strategically guide its growth today and over the long-term.

The plan will establish a strategic vision that will guide the City’s transportation and land use decisions as well as public investments over the next 5-10 years and beyond. It will help guide the City towards its vision of being a world-class port city that is vibrant, resilient, and sustainable. As a port city that is continuing to grow in its role in importing and exporting goods for the rest of the country, the plan will need to balance both the city’s commercial and personal transportation needs.

The plan is a crucial step towards creating a transportation network that serves community members of all ages and abilities and will support the bold visions in recent and existing initiatives, including the recently adopted Official Community Plan and the 2030 Vision document.

The Transportation Plan will be developed through a five-phase process over 12 months. There will be a variety of opportunities for the community members to participate in the planning process and provide input. Stay connected and keep up-to-date with this exciting project!

At present, the project is at the "Looking Forward" phase. The following documents, produced as part of the "Current Context" phase, can be found under the "Documents" section on this page:
