Consultation has concluded
The City of Prince Rupert recognizes the importance of affordable, quality and available child care to both families and the local economy. With Community Child Care Planning funding received from the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), the City is taking a leadership role in completing a Child Care Assessment and Action Plan. Key elements of the plan are to:
Inventory availability of current child care spaces;
Identify community child care needs & space creation targets;
Create a community action plan to meet space creation targets.
The City of Prince Rupert Child Care Assessment and Action Plan will provide the community with a clear picture of existing and future child care needs along with actions to realizing space creation targets. Specifically, the action plan will focus on opportunities that can be implemented at the community level within the frameworks of the existing provincial structures & policies.
The plan will also be a valuable resource for the City, child care operators, employers and community partners to use to proactively address local child care needs. In addition, it will be a key document to assist local applications for the recently announced Childcare BC New Spaces Fund.

Parent Survey – Open from August 15th, 2019 to September 30th, 2019, the purpose of the survey is to hear directly from parents on local child care needs, challenges and opportunities. Paper copies of the parent survey are also available at City Hall, the Recreation Complex, the Public Library, the Friendship House Association, Roosevelt Hub and Northern Savings Credit Union. When completing a survey, you can enter your name to win one of two prizes for completing the online survey! The Prizes include a $500 RESP from Northern Savings Credit Union or a free swim/skate pass. To participate visit the Parent Survey page below. PLEASE NOTE THIS SURVEY HAS NOW CLOSED. Child Care Provider Survey - Open from August 15th, 2019 to September 30th, 2019, the purpose of the survey is to hear directly from child care providers on local child care needs, challenges and opportunities. To participate visit the Child Care Survey page below. Respondents will be entered to win a free swim/skate pass. PLEASE NOTE THIS SURVEY HAS NOW CLOSED. Thank you to all who participated.
Child Participation Activity – The purpose of this exercise is to hear directly from children about what they value in respect their care environment. To participate download the toolkit for your child (or children you care for) to complete. Note that parent permission forms are included in the kits. Completed kits can be returned to the City of Prince Rupert (Attention: Veronika Stewart) by September 30th, 2019. To participate download the Child Participation activity in the Resources and Documents section to your right and return it to the front desk at City Hall, or download it directly, here.
Plan Review – The Draft Assessment and Action Plan is now available for review in the Documents Section of this page in the right hand column, and an additional follow up survey is linked here and in the "Survey" section below. You can also attend the public drop-in session on February 20th from 6 - 8 pm at the Lester Centre to allow for community review and feedback of the draft plan. Learn about the draft plan, hear success stories from other communities and to participate in a community discussion. There will be a $500 RESP prize draw from Northern Savings Credit Union for participants. Please note that this survey will close at 4 pm on Friday, Feb. 21

This past fall we heard from organizations, parents and child care providers on local child care needs, challenges and opportunities. This feedback was instrumental in shaping the development of the City of Prince Rupert Child Care Assessment & Action Plan project.
We now have a draft plan we’d like to share with you for review and comment. What do you think? Does this plan accurately reflect our child care needs? Your feedback on the draft plan will help to ground truth the information in the report and as well as the draft actions being proposed.
