The Prince Rupert and Area Accessibility Committee, established in the Spring of 2023, has been gradually working on the development of an Accessibility Plan as well as a mechanism for feedback that will let the community give our respective organizations opportunities to hear from people about how we can be more accessible.
The Committee includes the City of Prince Rupert, North Coast Regional District, Prince Rupert Library and District of Port Edward, and has 7 community members as well as staff representation from the respective organizations who attend.
Since May, the Committee has identified their own guiding principles, as well as key priorities in the different areas where the removal and prevention of barriers is recommended by legislation that align with partner services– employment, delivery of services, the built environment, information and communications, and transportation. In 2024, the Committee engaged with the community further on the different priorities for the Accessibility Plan, and we are now in the process of finalizing the Plan and prioritization of actions that came from that feedback. In addition, all organizations will implement a feedback mechanism for the community to provide input on accessibility concerns. The overall intent of this project is to better understand how people with disabilities experience our community differently, and how we can make things more accessible for all. We look forward to sharing the finished result of this collective work in the coming months.

The City of Prince Rupert, North Coast Regional District, Prince Rupert Library and District of Port Edward are working towards the development of an area accessibility plan that addresses accessibility for residents and visitors across the different programs and services we provide. Our Accessibility Committee members is made up of residents with lived experience or who provide caretaking support to those with accessibility needs, and they have directly developed the list of actions shared in this survey, with support from partner staff members. We have done our best to be comprehensive in our list, but look forward to hearing more from the community in what you think of our priorities!
